Well, we’ve managed to put 13k miles on this thing since we got it earlier this year. She was christened with a camping trip to the north side of the Catalina mountains the weekend I got her. Did a few more camping trips then took her on a road trip with my dog out to the Salton Sea, Slab City, and San Diego over Spring break.
Went on a few more camping trips as well as some more visits to the Old Pueblo over the spring. Lots of good memories and food in Tucson, especially on the south side.
My wife then took the kids on a three week, 4k+ mile roadtrip up the coast to Washington, then back over and down through Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico. They camped or stayed with friends and family the whole way. I drove up in the Jeep with our pocket pit and met them in Montana. Found a remote spot to camp, read and meditate in the Roosevelt NF while they stayed with a friend in northern CO.
The truck took a road gator to the face, but otherwise has been great. Did the upper ball joints when I first picked her up, and just put a fresh set of tires on her. Went with a set of Mickey Thompson “Deegan 38s” in 265/70/17 . The tires look and ride great. I’m sure they’ll be fine for the offroading I do. Anything too gnarly and I’d rather walk.
Behold, a pale horse...
Did a quick daytrip up to the Navajo reservation yesterday to help clear my head. Old Merle, a couple of mini cigars and this Toyota did the trick. I only have three more classes to take for my MS, and will be doing a research paper on a friend’s piece of land and water use after that. I feel a calking to be up in northeastern Arizona working on uranium mitigation up there. I’m starting to look at jobs with the Navajo Nation EPA so if anyone has any hookups I’d appreciate it. Some Diné art for your time. The artist is Daniel Josley and he has an Instagram. Check him out.

Bought it from a former Canadian.

Awesome all around, stoked you’re getting some outdoor time. That CO camp spot looks incredible.
In sort of related news, wifey has agreed/decided we need a family camp vehicle of some kind that’s not her aging Sienna. Looking forward to truck hunting, 4.7 Tundras and 4.0L Tacos are high on the list.

1977 Yamaha TT500. Bored out to a 540 with increased compression, a performance cam and a larger mikuni carb. Wheelie machine, will keep up with highway traffic but scary as hell as it has the smaller drum brakes than even my 175. Plus they’re black so they come pre faded in our heat. Currently adding head and tail lights so I can street it regularly.
The PO bought it new in Canada and used it only for ice racing up there and dirt racing down here. Thing is built like a brick shithouse. Much more heavy duty than any of my previous vintage bikes. Figured it work perfect for our coming Mad Max future.

I’m glad you like it - I’ve been thinking about buying a first gen Sequoia which is basically a Tundra underneath.

Yeah, that spot was great. I was sitting above 8k feet. Surrounding area was burned up a year ago when a controlled burn got out of hand but the immediate area was nice.
Awesome on approval for the new rig. I’m really glad I got the Tundra. The 4.7 is super smooth, and I’m still getting 17+ mpg on the highway which is better than the Jeep. I was looking at older 4 Runners to replace the BMW, but at 130k+ miles with no serious issues, I kind of want to see hiw far it’ll go.

I’m also eyeballing Sequoias and 4 Runners to possibly replace my wife’s car. I was reading HHFP info in your previous thread.

Great pics, thanks for sharing. Except for the lack of trains , and prison, that is the perfect country song

He is a veritable wealth of knowledge on this subject and I’m very glad he chimed in.
These are just also noone sells - I have 2 first gen Tundras and 5 Sequoias for sale within a 100 miles of me.

I realized after my reply that, actually, Merle’s song does mention mama, prison, trains, and getting drunk. So it also qualifies as a perfect country and western song!

I know it’s taboo to share remote camping locations, but...
just this once? =)

This is an especially sensitive area. There are some private cabins nearby, and I talked with one of the residents. They’ve had an issue with people camping in the area with illegal fires, and the Forest Service has been unhelpful in reducing the fire risk in the area, failing to maintain areas near roads . They also can’t get fire insurance after the F orest S ervice started a forest fire during a controlled burn. It’s not a secret spot, as it is off a forest road that seems to be somewhat maintained by a local 4wd club, but I don’t want to post the location on the inter nets. If you head into the Roosevelt NF west of Fort Collins, it’s not too hard to find a spot . There are lots of really nice designated camping areas along the river, but the FS contracted them out to a private company and they are a bit pricey. If I was with my family I would have camped at them.
The trails was a bit of a doozy . I was in the Jeep, and banged up my rear diff pretty good, requiring a reseal.

Completely understand.
Ouch! That sucks.
